Lumpy & The Dumpers - Mini Album July 21, 2016 12:02
Lumpy & The Dumpers lay waste with their new mini album on La Vida Es En Mus. This razor sharp shard of snotty hardcore is a complete treat for those who like their music and bands ugly. The cover speaks louder than words really.
La Vida had this to say about these reprobates... "St Louis Lumpy and the Dumpers delivers their first mini album, after a string of seven inches and tapes which gained them worldwide recognition among the hordes of misfits lovers of slimy bad punk musik. Nine tracks of snotty punk driven by one of the crudest guitars tones heard by these ears in a long time. The songs flow seamlessly, the lyrics are sharp and full of vile and stick in your brain like any classic punk should. The album includes their own classic take on 'Loony' the B-Side of the 1978 by Slime from London which feels both a statement and a re-appropiation of a song which could have easily being written by the Dumpers if it hadn't existed. In fewer words this is a magnificent gross record."
New Los Crudos Discography July 21, 2016 11:58
New in is the Los Crudos Discography from La Vida Es Un Mus. We're pretty exited about this long over due European release of this awesome discography.
This double LP is a fitting seal on a highly influential band. La Vida had this to say about the band - "LOS CRUDOS, formed in Chicago's Pilsen neighbourhood in the early 90's, are a Latino punk band with a strong socio-political message and an extremely militant DIY attitude. During their first incarnation, spanning the years 1991 to 1998 the band self-released their own records, printed their own merch, booked their own shows and toured relentlessly around the world. From South America to Japan including a 3 month European tour in the winter of 1996. They spoke to the freaks the outsiders and the minorities and were not afraid of confronting the white middle class punk who reigned supreme during the terrible 90's. A time which will not be remembered for their hardcore output except for a few exceptions, in which CRUDOS are surely included. Their sound, far from being a copycat of whatever flavour of the month was reigning at the time was heavy rooted in the golden years of European and Latino American ferocious hardcore punk. With bands as IMPACT, WRETCHED, OLHO SECO, TERVEET KADET or MASACRE 68 as obvious influences in a time when the simple mention of any of those bands (or any non English speaking bands really) was usually met with a laugh or a joke. They sang in Spanish, with aggression and conviction and that made their message spread out widely, reaching thousands of Spanish speaking punks both in Latino America and Spain as well as inside USA where third generation Latino kids surely were missing a voice within the punk scene. The band split up in 1998 after a really intense year of touring and reformed in 2008. The band will be undertaking their first ever Scandinavian tour in July/ Agust 2016." Pick it up now in store or order on the website. Limited copies so get in quick!

Hieroglyphic Being Returns to Soul Jazz! May 20, 2016 12:17
Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, returns for a new second album on Soul Jazz Records, after last year's debut 'The Acid Documents', this time under the name Africans with Mainframes. Hieroglyphic Being and fellow Chicago producer Noleian Reusse have been releasing music under the name Africans with Mainframes for over 15 years now, ever since their debut on Hieroglyphic Being's own Mathematics Recordings label in 2005. 'K.M.T.' is the debut album from the group, a collage of apocalyptic
Chicago acid meets industrial and transcendental post-house machine funk. Both intense and unique, the album of forward-thinking, experimental, boundary-pushing Afro-futurist electronic music shows why Hieroglyphic Being is regarded as one of the most serious purveyors of experimental black music today.
You can't stop the prophet! Born and based in Chicago, Moss's music embodies two of the cultural foundation blocks of the city's musical lineage; that of Chicago's original Acid House sound (c. 1986), that of Frankie Knuckles, Phuture, Marshall Jefferson et al, alongside a rigorous experimental sound searching that taps into the cosmic musical lineage of pioneering artist Sun Ra whose Arkestra landed and was based in the city from 1946-61.
New Soul Jazz Compilation Hits The Ground Like A Comet May 20, 2016 11:37
New Releases 20/5/16 May 20, 2016 11:05
A clutch of great stuff just hatched this week so get these earworms into your brain! Loads of great female artists rocking their wares this week. Check out the videos below.
Marissa Nadler - Strangers
For more than 12 years Marissa Nadler has perfected her own take on the exquisitely sculpted gothic American songform. On her seventh full-length, Strangers, released on Bella Union, she has shed any self-imposed restrictions her earlier albums adhered to, stepped through a looking glass, and created a truly monumental work. Out on Bella Union.
Kate Jackson - British Road Movies
Kate Jackson is back. The former frontwoman of the Long Blondes is pleased to announce her debut solo album, British Road Movies. The record was written by Jackson alongside guitarist and producer Bernard Butler (Suede, The Tears) at West Heath Studios in London. These ten songs were conceived as cinematic starting points, movie titles with lyrical story-boards. With 'British Road Movies' Jackson paints scenes and tells stories, paying homage to the colour, weather and architecture seen from every car windscreen. 'British Road Movies' takes in eclectic musical styles, from synth driven glam rock to Blade Runner electronica, faded piano allure to sweeping strings alt-country. All these recordings have two things in common, Jackson's unique vocal top line and Butler's instantly recognisable guitar. These are big, melodic alternative pop songs, with the guitarist's naturally cinematic production perfectly complementing the narrative of the record.
Adult Jazz - Earrings Off!
Adult Jazz first appeared back in 2013, amid a flurry of praise surrounding their joyous and addictive debut single 'Springful'. Their unanimously acclaimed debut album Gist Is (released in 2014) was a startling and mesmerising voyage from start to finish, taking a labyrinthian, fragmented pop-not-pop path, while maintaining a sense of humour in spite of its complex themes surrounding religion, gender and humanity. Following the release of Gist Is, the band went on to play sell out tours around Europe as well as festivals including Latitude, End of The Road, CMJ and Iceland Airways, attracting endorsements along the way from peers including David Byrne and Björk. Adult Jazz now return with a new record 'Earrings Off!', and their first for Tri Angle. In contrast to Gist Is, Earrings Off! finds the band confidently veering into more electronic territory with elasticated beats and harsh vocal experimentations riding alongside off kilter horn arrangements and treated string sounds, all shaped by the band's inimitable and unpredictable songwriting skills. Earrings Off! is the sound of a band breaking away from the crowd and becoming all the better for it.
Fews - Means
Having recently joined the ranks of the Play It Again Sam label, American/Swedish four-piece FEWS have been making some serious waves ahead of their debut album - produced by the acclaimed Dan Carey (Bat For Lashes, Toy, Hot Chip et al). Moody and brash, layered and luxurious, their own brand of malevolent post-punk continues to evolve and thrill and has seen the band bear resemblance to DIIV and Faust. The album includes the singles 'Ill' - an 8 minute psych rollercoaster - and 'dark/brooding' follow up 'The Zoo'.
onDeadWaves - S/T
You haven't heard them like this before, but you may already know the band. One is James Chapman, better known as Maps, whose critically acclaimed debut We Can Create was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, and whose latest album Vicissitude, came out on Mute. The other is Polly Scattergood, the electrically charged artist who has released two solo albums on Mute. The seeds of Chapman and Scattergood's creative partnership were sown in 2011, at Mute's Short Circuit festival, a special event at London's Roundhouse. The night saw different collaborations with Mute artists and Polly and James paired up to perform each other's songs. On Dead Waves launched their debut track, Blackbird, at the end of 2015. Q said "… a world of smeared mascara and trailer-park heartache, there's something wonderfully cinematic about this debut single." while The Guardian wrote "Blackbird, their debut single, somehow nods to both shoegaze and country, with a David Lynchian creepiness to both music and lyrics." Heavy of atmosphere, rich in melody, rippled with an air of malice and flowing female and male vocals, On Dead Waves' debut album will be released on Mute on May 20.

Crywank - Tomorrow Is Yesterday... May 11, 2016 15:30
Crywank, a band with a name so bad they may as well have left it blank, are surprisingly good. If they had called themselves 'Bon Iver' they would have (despite the lawsuits) been huge. Currently out on Mutant League, check out the surprise here,
Now Playing... May 09, 2016 17:14
Today's playlist in the shop (so far...)

The Kills - Ash & Ice May 09, 2016 12:09
It's hard to believe that there is a single person out there more excited for the release of the new Kills album than Joseph at Beatdown (seriously, he nearly became light) but we know that there will still be plenty of you slavering in anticipation of this new delight. Out in June on Domino, fever pitch should be reached by the end of the month.
New video for 'Heart Of A Dog' streams below.
The previous video has already racked up 1.5 million views, add to the total below!
Eagulls - Ullages May 09, 2016 11:43
Eagulls release their new highly-anticipated sophomore album this Friday on Partisan Records. Drummer Henry Ruddell says of the album “It’s still all from George’s [Mitchell, frontman] viewpoint but whereas on the last album it was his own personal outlook, this time we tried to step away from that a bit and look outwards and how he gets on with other people. It feels like it’s more to do with relationships, not in a romantic way, but more as in your relationship with the person you might bump into on the street, or the person you work with..very brief encounters and how odd they can be.”
The video for lead track 'My Life In Rewind' streams below!
Artwork Architecture May 06, 2016 13:53
When putting out the new Jega collection 1995 in noticed that the artwork bore a similarity to one of my favourite architects Lebbeus Woods. Woods was a pioneers and has influenced generations of new architects with his singular vision and philosophy of building. You might recognise some of his work pilfered in the Bruce Willis film 12 Monkeys. Check out the cover of Jega's 1995 below and see for yourself!
Anohni - Hopelessness May 06, 2016 13:11
ANOHNI, pka Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, is back with a new alias and a new album on the awesome Secretly Canadian label. Switching up the production and roping in electronic pioneers like Oneohtrix Point Never, it seems like this is a new era for the artist, surviving the curse of the Mercury Music Awards. ANOHNI has once again proved that she can bring it. Check out the preview for the album below.
White Lung - Paradise May 06, 2016 13:03
In case you hadn't heard White Lung have a new scorching album out on Domino. Check out the video for the lead single 'Hungry' below! The album stays true to form but boast some excellent production, moving the band out from under the skuzzy punk stone, and into the light of the major leagues. Not to be missed, don't come crying to us when you miss out on the gorgeous blue indies only wax!
Spaceship Metal! May 06, 2016 12:36
With the release of Vektor's new album Terminal Redux we though we'd look over some other great metal albums with space themed covers!
First up Voivod - Killing Technology. No serious metal head should be without a copy of this head smashing classic.
Next Crimson Glory's Transcendence. This '88 classic boasts some awesome artwork along side some total facemelters.
This list couldn't do without this completely awesome adition
Nocturnus without doubt own metal and keyboards in this era, meshing together the two with no gimmicks. Top of the pile artwork-wise for me. Don't forget to check out The Key, it stands head and shoulders above much of the thrash from the era.
